We thought we were preparing for one new baby, and then life gave us an amazing plot twist. But the story of the Carey twins started long before that first ultrasound.
This is the story of how two young people found each other, lost the timing, found their way back, and somehow ended up here: preparing for two little ones, one big family, and the next big adventure of our lives.
Patrick and Kathleen’s story started back in 2009, when two young, dumb, and very in-love early-20-somethings kept finding reasons to run into each other at work.
What started as workplace flirting slowly became something much bigger. There were tailgates at Crew games, adventures around Ohio, nights spent supporting friends’ music and athletic endeavors, and more than a few costume parties that were probably taken way too seriously.
It was fun, chaotic, and full of the kind of memories you only make when you’re young and convinced you have everything figured out.
But life had other plans. Through a flurry of changes, Patrick and Kathleen eventually headed in separate directions to tackle their next chapters: Patrick in Florida and Kathleen in Northern Ohio.
The timing wasn’t right yet.
Years later, life brought them both back to Columbus.
This time, things were different. They were older, a little wiser, and no longer trying to figure out who they were from scratch. When Patrick and Kathleen found their way back to each other, it felt familiar, but new.
And this time, there was a tiny tot named Skylar in tow.
Their story became less about late nights and big parties, and more about building something steady and real. They moved in together, traveled together, created new traditions, blended their little family, and started imagining what the future could look like.
It wasn’t the same story from 2009.
It was better.
After a few heartbreaks on the path to parenthood, Patrick and Kathleen started to wonder if children might not be part of their story together. But even as they tried to make peace with that possibility, their home still felt like it had a little more love to give.
Enter Parker: a goofy, kind-hearted cuddle machine shaped like a boxer puppy.
He was sweet, wiggly, ridiculous, and immediately impossible not to love. The name Parker came easily, but for paperwork purposes, he needed something a little more unique. Around that time, Kathleen and Skylar were very into the “Potato Dog” song and joked that maybe he should be Parker Potato.
Patrick refused to give his dog the initials “PP.”
So, in honor of the boxer breed’s German roots, he swapped in the German word for potato, added a little unnecessary flair, and Parker officially became Parker Kartoffel von Wigglebottom.
He quickly became part of the family. Parker loves his people, insists on being included in everything, and has been filling the house with wiggles, snuggles, and chaos ever since.
And then, after only three months with Parker, something crazy happened...
Patrick and Kathleen knew they wanted more kids. That hope came with excitement, nerves, and some heartbreak along the way. But eventually, the journey led to an ultrasound appointment on February 17, 2026.
They went in expecting to see one little heartbeat.
Instead, there were two.
Two babies. Two healthy little hearts. Two tiny lives already changing everything.
In complete shock and excitement, Kathleen grabbed Patrick’s arm and could only get out:
“PATRICK!!! TWINS?!?!”
And just like that, the next chapter of the story became much bigger than either of them expected.
The Carey twins were officially on the way.
Now, Patrick, Kathleen, Skylar, and Parker are getting ready for life as a family of six.
The twins are officially due on September 12, 2026, but they’ll arrive in August at the latest. Until then, we’re learning, planning, laughing, worrying, nesting, and trying to wrap our heads around the fact that there are really two little ones on the way.
We are so grateful for everyone who has loved us through every version of this story and is now cheering on Baby A and Baby B with us.
The adventure is just getting started.
